After you’ve established a consistent topical regimen and improved your nutrition to support healthy skin, allow me to suggest a new area for improvement: your home. There’s no denying that your surroundings affect your skin-healthy tone, but the house is sometimes disregarded. Not anymore! Discover the top four house improvements for bright skin in 2024 here.
1. Install filters in the sink and shower.
Not only is filtered water good for drinking, but it’s also good for your skin. Depending on where you live, your water may include high concentrations of drying chemicals, such as chlorine, which over time can harm the health of your skin and hair.
The solution is to, if possible, purchase water filters for your sink and shower. Even though these devices can be somewhat expensive, experts say they are still a smart purchase because you can carry them with you wherever you go. 2. Put in a humidifier in your space.
Increased skin sensitivity and obstinate texture might result from dry air. This occurs because of a process known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL), in which your skin literally loses water (1). This can damage your skin barrier and cause a variety of skin issues, such as flakes, pimples, sensitivity, and more.
Keeping a humidifier in your room or by your bedside can help prevent TEWL by preventing the environment from depriving your skin of vital moisture. Not everyone will need this, but if you frequently suffer from dry skin or live in a dry region, it’s something to think about.
Humidifiers, as you may have been aware, can grow mold if they are not properly cleaned or positioned. I wrote a whole post about it! A food source (dust, or organic materials like drywall and insulation) and water (a leak, spill, or any place with humidity levels above 60%) are the two things that mold requires to survive.
For these reasons, if you do use a humidifier, make sure it is frequently cleaned, filled with filtered water, and only used when the humidity level in your home is very low (less than 50%).
3. Choose pillowcases made of satin or silk.
Pillowcases made of silk or satin might lessen the amount of tugging on your face’s skin and hair. What was the outcome? Less frizz and sleep-induced fine lines (sometimes termed “pillow lines”) in the morning. Although this cost more than standard pillow covers, you only need to replace the cushion you sleep on.
