In this particular study, 1,923 individuals of both men and women between the ages of 20 and 80 were observed; some of them had diabetes or prediabetes already.
They looked at relationships between the participants’ tea consumption and their blood sugar levels as determined by urine samples. It excluded the possibility of compounding variables such hereditary susceptibility to diabetes.
Since the study was qualitative in nature, the reason for the large difference in the incidence of Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes cannot be precisely explained.
Although researchers speculate that the bioactive components in black tea may be to blame by either directly or indirectly altering the kidneys’ ability to secrete glucose. More investigation is required to validate the results in more populations.
