Although it’s easy to overlook in the trials of everyday existence, humans are multidimensional creatures. We have a spirit that needs to be treated with the same respect and care as our bodies and minds because we are more than just those things. We take showers cleansing our bodies, schedule therapy sessions to purify our brains, but how can we purify our spirits, and what does that genuinely entail?
Spiritual cleansing: what is it?
Rituals, exercises, and deeds establish balance. They also add a connection between the mind, body, soul, and spirit are all included in spiritual cleansing. Anything that leads to cleansing or the removal of anything poisonous is considered a spiritual cleanse.
In a spiritual sense, toxicity is a much broader concept. We become what we witness. If we are constantly consumed with worry, negativity, loss, drama, gossip, lack, comparison, competitiveness, past, future, or ego, our energy levels plummet and we become cognitively, emotionally, physically, and spiritually depleted. If we don’t exercise our spiritual activities daily, energy might become trapped, stagnant, or absorb whatever our concentration is focused on, influencing our entire existence.
When our energy becomes old and stagnant, or when we absorb the energy of others. This can lead to unwanted habits and patterns. That’s where a spiritual detox comes in—but how do we go about doing it?
7 Rituals and Practices for Spiritual Cleansing
1. Meditation.
Meditation is the most powerful method of spiritual cleansing since it cleanses our physical body, mind, and energy or prana and aids in the removal of negativity, imbalances, and toxicity. Meditation improves and relaxes our brain, controls our neurological system, strengthens our immune system, increases our life force, and connects us to our soul, essence, and pleasant nature.

2. Spiritual bathing.
A spiritual cleansing bath can assist us in cleansing on both the physical and psychic levels. A restorative bath not only relieves lactic acid from aching muscles, but it also sets the tone for deep relaxation. Epsom salt combined with various aromatherapy is relaxing for our nervous system and tranquil for the mind, in my opinion.
If you want to take your bath ritual to the next level, Ayurveda provides several different cleaning baths with different herbs to assist detoxify our system depending on our doshas—which may be quite balanced.
3. Prayer for spiritual cleansing.
A cleansing prayer can be quite beneficial to the soul. Prayer, according to her, is something that comes from the purity of the heart, or sacred sounds of creative intellect that promote progress. Cleansing prayer improves mental power and vigor, relieves tension, and has the potential to transport us to higher states of awareness. It’s a lovely way to connect with the divine and sacred.
4. Healing with sound.
This method cleanses through frequency, whether using crystal bowls, tuning forks, gongs, or any other sound-healing instrument. We can entrain our brainwaves by using rhythm and frequency. The concept of entrainment occurs when sound provides a constant frequency for our brain waves to connect to.
It is therefore possible to move from our regular beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed awareness) and even theta (meditative state) and delta (sleep; where internal healing can take place) (1).

5. Sage for spiritual cleansing.
Although sage is the most well-known sacred smoke, copal and sandalwood are equally deeply purifying to us and the environment. Most civilizations that employ sacred smoke do so to prepare and set the tone for a meditative, deep, calm experience. These sacred smokes cleanse, clear, and uplift the energy in our minds, bodies, and soul.
6. Journaling.
Journaling has been linked to reduced mental anguish (2) and enhanced well-being, with studies revealing that when we express our emotions in words, we stimulate the portion of our brain that processes emotions (3). Simply putting pen to paper allows emotional energy to flow more effectively through us. It doesn’t matter if your journal contains confessions, poems, or scribbles—it’s the habit that makes it effective.
7. Breathwork.
One of the most powerful types of spiritual cleansing is breathwork. Conscious breathing helps to build the bond between our body and mind. It calms the mind, relaxes the brain, promotes cognitive coherence, and helps with a variety of physical health issues such as lung function, blood pressure, and brain function.
To Wrap Things Up
We can try our hardest to maintain a pure energy and a light spirit as we navigate this planet and this lifetime, but accepting negative energy is a natural aspect of being human. The things that prevent us from moving forward really serve as triggers for more development. A spiritual detox can be your spark when you feel it’s time to let go of limiting ideas, patterns, and hurdles. Who couldn’t use greater wholeness and spiritual cleansing to uplift us?
