There are perks to having a piece of chocolate after dinner; if it makes you delighted, then go ahead and indulge to your heart’s content! But are there any physical rewards supported by science? Naturally, it all depends on the kind of chocolate you consume.
Fortunately, dark chocolate does offer some surprising full-body health advantages, particularly in terms of improving mood. A hint: After that sugary treat, there are multiple reasons why you might feel better.
Can cortisol levels be lowered by dark chocolate?
Thirty participants in a study were given 40 grams of dark chocolate to eat for up to 14 days (1). Blood and urine samples were tested at the start, halfway, and finish of the trial by researchers.
It’s interesting to note that study participants who were categorized as having “high anxiety” displayed a unique metabolic profile that suggested a different energy homeostasis and gut microbiota. Considering our current understanding of the gut-brain link, this makes it logical.

The study offers compelling evidence that 40 grams of dark chocolate consumed every day for two weeks may help reduce stress hormones and improve metabolism.
Also, since stress can cause breakouts and a decrease in the creation of collagen (i.e. more fine lines and wrinkles), any diet that supports hormonal health and lowers cortisol levels can also have positive effects on the entire body and appearance.
The good news is that. The bad news is that finding chocolate without a lot of added sugar isn’t always simple. Be on the lookout for organic cacao, pure dark chocolate, and natural sweeteners like pure monk fruit extract.
A thick hot chocolate without added sugar can even be your choice if you’re in the mood for something more luxurious.
Take this study as just one more justification for developing a regular dark chocolate habit. But it’s crucial to give preference to premium dark chocolate sources free of added sugars. That being said, chocolate has many health benefits for the body and skin, particularly when paired with other vitamins.
